Insulation Oils cover transformer oils and cable oils used in their respective electrical insulation systems. Transformer oils perform two important functions in compatible oil-filled equipment: providing electrical insulation and carrying heat away from internal components. Cable oils are intended for compatible oil-filled cable systems, where the fluid forms part of the insulation arrangement. These are application-specific fluids, so a transformer oil and a cable oil should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both belong to the insulation-oil category.
Choosing the correct oil requires consideration of the equipment manufacturer’s specification, dielectric performance, viscosity, operating conditions and compatibility with materials and existing fluids. Moisture and contamination can affect insulating performance, making appropriate handling and condition assessment important throughout service. When requesting a product, provide the transformer or cable-system details, the required specification and any information about the oil already in use. Confirm the selected grade through its technical data sheet and the equipment supplier’s guidance before filling, topping up or replacing an existing charge.
